At the center of the Limnakaros Plateau, at an altitude of 1150 meters, stands the Temple of the Holy Spirit, a small stone church dedicated to the Holy Spirit and the Transfiguration of the Savior.
The double temple has a long history, since it has undergone many and radical interventions in its architectural structure, most notably in 1875, where the northern aisle dedicated to the Holy Spirit was added. It was only at the end of the 20th century that the restoration work of the Temple, which gave the original nave to the southern aisle, was completed, while a remarkable fresco decoration of exceptional significance and value was revealed.
The frescoes revealed on the aisle of Metamorphosis date back to the first half of the 14th century and make the Church of the Holy Spirit the only frescoed temple in the Lassithi plateau during the Venetian period. The reason is that the Lassithi Plateau was closed and deserted according to a Venetian decree prohibiting the occupation of it, while there was no church in frescoes in Crete, a habit that was later extended.
The Church of the Holy Spirit gathers many believers from all over Crete every year, namely at noon on Good Friday, the famous ritual of the Holy Spirit Epitaph.
